The Wounded Landscape

Sonia Shomalzadeh is a fine art degree student currently in her second year at City & Guilds of London Art School. In July Sonia will be working as on of 17 creative mentors to 500 secondary school students on the multimedia installation 'Some Like it Hot', at The Charter School, London. Sonia has kindly permitted Cool it Schools to feature her work on our web site so we can show an example of how an artist's creative practice links to climate change.

Sonia's latest work is about the wounded landscape, using materials in the painting that are specific to the subject, for instance crushed charcoal, wood shavings and earth. The first painting was inspired by the decimation of the rainforests in Borneo. Sonia conveys the damage left behind by people through marks made on the surface of her paintings during the process of making.
