Students at Uxbridge High School create a flock of 40 vivid birds with artist Hatty Morris
26th-27th January 2009
2 days, 170 students, 40 birds!
Day 1: In pairs or threes the students squidged wire mesh into bird shapes and wound brown tape around their heads, necks and tails ready for the addition of feathers on day 2. Nespaper made the basis for the wings.
All sorts of birds emerged- some long and slender, others built like tankers.
Day 2: New students arrived to add feathers to one bird between two. Coloured bin bages, plastic bags, old christmas wrapping paper, tissue paper and ribbon were all cut and curled to make feathers, ruffs and eccentric crests.
As you can see, the final birds came in all colours and designs. They are now suspended off a giant staircase outside the brand new and state of the art Activity Suite at Uxbridge High School- a strange and exotic flock to rival the flock of seagulls that land outside the building every lunchtime.
